018 - Bounce baby bounce
What do you get when you throw a rubber ball at a wall? It will bounce back to you. You don’t believe me? Try it. Oh, and make sure no one else’s around. You don’t want it to hit them right in the gut. It hurts, you know.
Obviously, if you throw a pie at your friend, don’t expect it to bounce back to you. You might as well get ready to flee the scene, if you really value your life and don’t wanna spend the next 2 hours cleaning it from your clothes.
By the way, did you also know that light could also be bounced back to you, or anyone else for that matter? No, not by lobbing a flashlight at your friends. Read it again, light, not flashlight.
It is a tried-and-true method of making your image more pleasant to the eyes of the beholder. Photographers around the world have been known to use this technique almost every time they are shooting indoors, unless the event that they assigned/went to did not allow any flash photography (how do you solve this, eh? One clue; opening).
Basically, it works by pointing your flash upward, so that the light bursting from it will have their journey like this; bulb, ceiling, your friends’ faces.
Hey, are you trying to be lazy? This thing is same as the reflection technique!
Hats off to you! You have been following my lessons all this time. But the key difference between these two methods, is that this technique manipulate light that is generated by your flash unit, while with the reflection method, you play around with available ambient (natural) light. It’s like eating a burger. You can put some mustards, or some chili sauces, but the point is always the same; to satisfy your hunger (and make your wallet thinner by a fraction of an inch) ![]()
Note: Like diffusion, this technique will only easily work if you have a separate flash unit attached to your camera (99% of the bad boys/girls use SLR/DSLR), or your digicam enables you to tilt the built-in flash. But, hey, let your creativity run wild and free
. If you have a way of making this method easier, share it with us!
